Thermoplastic Nanocomposite

HX5 is an ultra-lightweight and mechanically superior structural nanocomposite. Designed by Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works® in a strategic effort to create the most capable, balanced, and versatile thermoplastic blend in the world, HX5 boasts best-in-class mechanical properties that rival many traditional aerospace-grade materials at a fraction of the weight. Readily manufacturable by almost any process, from CNC machining to injection molding, it offers far greater production options and manufacturing speeds than aluminum. Extensively tested in real-world environments within the atmosphere and beyond, HX5 is an exceptional alternative to machined aluminum in nearly every application, offering equal or better performance at half the weight.

Components have been manufactured with HX5 for fifth-generation jet fighters, high-speed helicopters, UAV’s, amphibious transport vehicles, missiles, rockets, and satellites, proving its suitability for a wide range of applications and environments. HX5 has clear advantages over machined aluminum, thermoset composites, and other available reinforced thermoplastics. The benefits offered by HX5 are now available commercially to a wide range of customers.

Widely certified, proven, and rigorously tested: HX5 has met stringent Department of Defense requirements for flame, smoke, and toxicity, as well as NASA spacecraft material limits for volatile condensable materials and outgassing metrics for total mass loss. It has also passed galvanic corrosion testing, solvent and fuel susceptibility testing, atomic oxygen radiation resistance, accelerated lifetime thermal cycling and high-temperature thermal stability testing. These and other highly selective certifications set HX5 apart from the vast majority of thermoplastics, none of which can match these wide-ranging material properties.

Extreme manufacturing flexibility: The excellent dimensional stability and CNC-machining compatibility inherent to HX5 make it a perfect candidate for almost any application. The freedom afforded by HX5’s pristine injection-molding compatibility allows extreme liberty in improving upon aluminum structures, while drastically increasing manufacturing speed.
